Girls Scout Troop 1434 Earns Silver Award
Six girls in Girl Scout Troop 1434 - Service Unit 16 have earned
their Silver Award. This is the highest award Girl Scouts ages
11 – 14 can earn. It recognizes accomplishments in Girl Scouting
and community service, while working to better their lives and
the lives of others.
In addition to working in the Food Bank of Delaware sorting
food, they conducted activities for families in the Emmaus House
of Homeward Bound in Newark. Two Game Nights were held where the
girls played games with the children while the parents learned
about nutrition from local nurses. They also collected paper
products to donate to the house.
To top off the year, they hosted a fabulous picnic with food,
crafts and games enjoyed by the adults and children. The girls
completed the budget, list of items needed for the picnic and
planned the activities for the whole day. Over 40 hours of
planning went into the event.

Daisy
Girl Scout Troop 579 took their first camping trip. On Friday
May 16th, five girls (4 in kindergarten and 1 in first grade),
two parents and troop leader Brenda Ptak traveled to Country
Center Camp, located in Hockessin Delaware.
Arriving on a damp and misty evening; girls hiked their gear to
their Adirondack unit (a three sided building with a roof), and
set up camp. A camp fire warmed everyone, while girls enjoyed
roasted marshmallows and s’mores. After singing a few camp
songs, girls snuggled into their warm sleeping bags for a good
nights rest.

| Troop 109 Sew Hats |
May 20, '08 |
May
20, 2008 was an exciting evening at Christ Episcopal Church,
Milford, DE. That was the night some of the ladies of Christ
Church and the girls from Girl Scout Troop 109 gathered to sew
hats for the Seamen’s Center in Wilmington. The Seamen’s Center
is a home away from home for the seamen coming from foreign
countries. The climate in these countries does not allow the men
to be fully prepared for winters on the Delaware shore and
surrounding areas. Thus the hats are a welcomed gift to these
men.
The ladies of Christ Church together with the girls learned
about the Seamen’s Center and learned to layout, cut and sew the
hats. Pictured are the ladies and girls of Troop 109. The girls
will be able to apply this learning session to be put toward
their Community Service badge.
A total of 53 hats were cut and several sewn that evening. The
ladies will be busy finishing these hats to be given to the
Director of the Center, Ms. Joan Lyons at the Annual Episcopal
Church Women meeting in October along with winter gloves being
collected throughout the Diocese of Delaware.
Special thanks to all who participated. The men will know people
care and will be grateful to Episcopalians in Delaware and the
Girl Scouts.

Brownie/Junior
Girl Scout Troop 92 of Service Unit 2 participated in a service
project to help the 4-H Club of Kent County Delaware assemble

as fun items (i.e. frisbees, craft items, stuffed animals).
Troop 92 collected items for these packs and were able to
assemble 30 Hero Packs. Breana S., Brownie, wrote letters to
various organizations asking for monetary donations. She was

On
January 30, 2008, Cadette/Teen Troop 464 went to the New Castle
County Police Station Community Services Building on Rt. 13 in
New Castle for a tour of the new facilities. Sr. Corporal Dowe gave the full tour and a very educational
insight into the variety of positions held there. The 911 Call
Center Staff showed us how their computers track emergency calls
and response times, and we saw a group of detectives hard at
work.
After
the tour, we had a question and answer session in a conference
room with Sr. Corporal Dowe who helped us with our Law & Order
IP. Before we left, he presented each one of us with a goodie
bag. If anyone would like to set up a tour for their Troop, you
can call Sr. Corporal Dowe on 302-395-8061, and he’ll be happy
to reschedule it for you.
