Throughout the giving season, many organizations participate in Giving Tuesday events--a one day campaign to give back to local nonprofit organizations on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. This year, Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay partnered with the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore for Shore Gives More! All of the funds raised during this Giving Tuesday will be used for our Community Outreach programming across the Delmarva Peninsula. The girls in these programs have limited adult supervision, may reside in high crime and drug abuse neighborhoods, and face a variety of challenges. Girl Scouting gives them a chance to build their self-esteem and confidence, perform better in school, and have a safe place during out of school hours. These are girls who truly need Girl Scouts.
Girl Scout Outreach Program priorities include STEM, Financial Literacy, and BFF (Be a Friend First, Girl Scouts' anti-bullying program). These programs are all designed to build leadership, teach girls lifelong skills, and develop healthy relationships.
There are so many success stories with our community outreach programming. Research shows that 94% of girls in Girl Scouts outreach programs show progress in social and/or emotional development. There was one girl in our area who needed to be accompanied by a school counselor due to emotional outbursts, extreme anger, and other behavioral issues. The counselor shared with GSCB staff that the only time this girl is happy, has fun, smiles, and does not exhibit aggressive behavior is when she is at Girl Scouts. While Girl Scouting is about learning important life skills, it's also about building confidence, and providing girls with a positive experience. The all-girl environment where a girl can have fun, make mistakes, learn, and have her fellow Girl Scouts build her up is what this program is all about.
This Giving Tuesday, consider donating to Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay through Shore Gives More. Any amount will help us provide programming to girls who truly need Girl Scouts. You can create a Cheer Page for GSCB, set a goal for your cheer page, and ask your friends and family to give to Girl Scouts on Giving Tuesday as well.
