What is Peninsula Day of Service? We heard you! Through our “What Can GSCB Sessions do for You?” series, we listened when you expressed that you wanted opportunities for our Girl Scouts and Members to take ownership in the maintenance of the properties that are so loved! From signage and inventory lists of what is at each location, to service projects on property, Peninsula Day of Service is one day where we can all come together to make this happen! Here is a list of the priorities:
- Unit and Activity Inventory
- Unit and Activity Signage Updates
- Unit Deep Cleaning
- Service Project Opportunities
There is the offer to stay overnight – tell me more:
- Who can stay? GSCB Troops, Groups and Volunteers will have the opportunity to stay on property at no cost on Friday (4/11) and Saturday (4/12) evenings. This opportunity will be managed on a first come first serve basis with an establishment of a waiting list once overnight capacity is reached.
- Do adults staying overnight need to be a registered member with a background check? YES. We are so excited to offer the opportunity for our Peninsula Day of Service volunteers to stay overnight, but the safety of Girl Scouts and members will always be a priority. In accordance with GSCB Policy, Troops must provide proper adult/Girl Scout ratio, and any adult chaperones who are planning to stay overnight, (Troop Leaders, volunteers and caregivers who are helping on Peninsula Day of Service) must be a GSCB member with a current registration and have a criminal background check processed by GSCB. Here's more information on becoming a GSCB registered member and Volunteer.
- All other adult volunteers are welcome to join your group on Saturday for day-of activities.
- What about families and siblings? Families and siblings are welcome to join us on Peninsula Day of Service and may stay overnight as long as adults meet the above requirements. Any male volunteers staying overnight must be accommodated with separate sleeping quarters. If family style camping is requested, please reach out to MemberCare@cbgsc.org to be connected with a Peninsula Day of Service team lead. Childcare will NOT be provided.
If our Troop is staying overnight, what are the accommodations? Upon registration for the event, you will be asked to provide your group size and preferred accommodations on the camp property of your choice. While these preferences will be considered on a first come first serve basis, GSCB retains the right to make the best placements for all groups staying on site. Sleeping arrangements will be communicated to troop leaders the first week of March.
Can they bring an RV/camper? Not all of our properties are able to accommodate the parking of campers, and no site can accommodate hook-ups or dump needs. If a family is interested in bringing their camper, GSCB will consider it on a case-by-case basis. Please refer them to contact membercare@cbgsc.org.
What about running water? The camp brochure says that it’s off season. That’s true! The timing of this event falls during a time when our running water in certain areas of each camp is not typically turned on for the season. For this special event, our maintenance team will make the final decision to turn the water on early based on weather trends and temperatures as we get closer to the actual event date.
While each camp has certain buildings/lodges with year-round water/restrooms available, we encourage all participants to prepare by bringing your own drinking water for the duration of your stay. If the lack of running water inhibits projects at certain units, your GSCB site lead will provide a solution or alternative project where water is not a concern.
Can Girl Scouts earn community service hours? YES!!! We love to support our Girl Scouts’ community service hour requirements. Please have the Girl Scout provide a PAPER copy of any form that needs to be signed / acknowledged so that their GSCB site lead can sign it at the end of the day.
What happens if there is inclement weather on the day of the event? This event was planned for this particular weekend in preparation for a busy camp season! As that is quickly approaching and our troops are already planning stays, there is not a rain date for the event itself. While inclement weather may certainly impact outdoor service projects on this day, we will still be able to complete the inside inventory, cleaning, and signage projects. Your GSCB site lead will have all of the opportunities available and will help find a project that is right for your troop.
Is Peninsula Day of Service held at all GSCB Camp Properties? Peninsula Day of Service is being held at Camp Country Center and Camp Todd.
I can’t attend, how else can I support the day?
