Volunteer as a troop leader: Guide a group of Girl Scouts by creating a fun, safe space. We’ll help you get started with easy-to-use tools like the Girl Scout Experience Box and ready-made Troop Year Plans so you can focus on fun, growth, and connection.

Be a supportive adult volunteer: Help girls thrive by assisting with meetings, activities, or special events, no matter your schedule or experience.

Get involved on your terms. Choose a role that fits your time and interests—from leading a troop to lending a hand behind the scenes.

No previous experience is required to support girls as they build confidence, skills, and lifelong friendships through the Girl Scout experience. Your local Girl Scout Council can help get you started.

The Girl Scout membership year runs from October 1, 2026, to September 30, 2027. Annual membership dues are $65 for girl members and $30 for adult members. Additional local fees and discounts may apply. Financial aid may be available. Girl Scout memberships must be renewed annually.

Continuous Volunteer Opportunities

Troop Leader toggle arrow

When you think of Girl Scout volunteers, most think of the classic Girl Scout Troop Leader - she's known, she's loved! Our Troop Leaders (also called Co-Leaders) are extremely valued members of our GSCB family. Troop Leaders are responsible for organizing and planning meetings with girls help, handling parent and caregiver communications, and most importantly, serving as a mentor for girls as they make new friends and develop new skills.

Sounds like a big job, right? It can be, but GSCB staff are dedicated to supporting you every step of the way and encouraging you to lean on your fellow Co-Leader(s) and Troop Support Volunteers for help.

Troop Support Volunteer toggle arrow

Troop Support Volunteer is the perfect role for anyone looking to support a Girl Scout troop with as much or as little committment as their schedule allows. Troop Support Volunteers can be troop meeting helpers, troop photographers, field trip or camping chaperones, troop money managers, activity planners, designated troop drivers...the list goes on! As long as your a registered and background checked Troop Support Volunteer, you can contribute to the troop in meaningful ways that we know will be SO appreciated by your troop Co-Leaders. Service Unit Manager toggle arrow

Service Unit Managers are volunteers that help guide and mentor Troop Leaders to creating memories they will never forget! Our council is broken up into a number of Service Units, which are comprised of all of the existing Girl Scout troops in a given area. Service Unit Managers will plan and organize regular Troop Leader meetings and trainings, handle communications with Troop Leaders in their Service Unit, and work with the Service Unit team to host fun and exciting girl events.

Service Unit Support Volunteers are valued members of the Service Unit team! Product Program Volunteer (Cookie) toggle arrow

Product Program Volunteers are so important to helping the annual Fall Product and Cookie Programs run smoothly! You may know this person as the "Cookie Mom" or "Cookie Manager" for the troop - but Product Program Volunteers can be anyone! Moms, Dads, Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, friends or community members are welcome to be a part of the incredible entrepreneurial experience of our product programs.

When becoming a Product Program volunteer, you have two options:

Fall Product Champion - Volunteer at either the Troop or Service Unit level to help girls succeed during the annual Fall Product Program. This is a great option if you are limited on the time you can commit as the Fall Product Program is much shorter than the Cookie Program and does not involve booth sales. Cookie Champion - Volunteer at either the Troop or Service Unit level to help girls succeed during the famous Girl Scout Cookie Program. It's famous because customers know and love the cookies and love supporting Girl Scouts, but it's not possible without a lot of help from our volunteers. Learn more about the Cookie Program.

Camp and Outdoor Skills Facilitator or Instructor toggle arrow

You love the outdoors and are interested in helping Girl Scouts experience new and exciting outdoor adventures? You just might be perfect for an outdoor facilitator or instructor role! Outdoor Facilitators or Instructors can volunteer their time on an as-needed basis for events, camp, trainings, etc.

First, what is the difference between a Facilitator and an Instructor?

Facilitator - Serves as a hands-on educator for GIRLS in a particular skill.
Instructor - Serves as a hands-on educator for VOLUNTEERS in a particular skill. Instructors train interested volunteers in becoming a facilitator.

At GSCB, we offer a wide variety of outdoor opportunities and there's no "one size fits all" when it comes to facilitating or training on those opportunities. Therefore, you can narrow your focus to one of these categories:

The Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Board of Directors is made up of dedicated community members with a wide variety of expertise and experience that they bring to table to guide us in making organizational and business decisions.

If you're interested in getting involved with Girl Scouts, but don't have the time or interest in a long-term commitment, one of our short-term or as-needed volunteer positions may be the perfect fit for you. Steps to Becoming a Volunteer

Every Girl Scout volunteer must be a registered member of Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay. The Girl Scout membership year runs from Oct 1 to Sept 30. At the close of each year, renewal of membership is required to continue participating. The adult membership fee is $30.00. Financial Assistance is available for those who qualify.

On the welcome page, select "Volunteer" to join an existing troop, or "Create a Troop" to start your own troop.

Enter the requested information. If at any point you are unsure what to enter, please reach out to us at MemberCare@cbgsc.org.

To apply for Financial Assistance, choose “Request Financial Assistance” on the payment screen.

Option: A lifetime Girl Scout Membership can be purchased for $400.00. Financial Assistance is not available for Lifetime Memberships. Additionally, if you are a Girl Scout alum and between the ages of 18-29 or have served as a volunteer for 10+ years, you qualify for a lifetime membership discount - meaning you can get a Lifetime Membership for only $200! Background Checks toggle arrow

All Girl Scout volunteers must complete a background check to ensure the safety and well-being of our Girl Scouts and adult members. Use the button below to complete the required background check, and follow these tips:

Use a laptop or desktop computer to complete the background check. The Asurint system does not support smart phone or tablet use.

The background check may seem repetitive but keep going until you hit the final submit button. You will receive a confirmation email once the form is completed.

The background check comes with a $6.25 fee. There are two payment options:
1. For the self-pay option, please use portal code: selfpay
2. For the council-pay option, please use the portal code: councilpay

Volunteer Training toggle arrow

Once you have completed your registration and background checks, you're ready to get embark on your volunteer journey! In order to set you up for success, GSCB offers a library of trainings in gsLearn, our online training system available via your MyGS account.

For some volunteer roles such as Troop Leaders, Service Unit Managers, and Product Program volunteers, there are required trainings such as Mandated Reporter Training, New Leader Onboarding, Fall Product and Cookie Trainings, etc. Those trainings will be assigned to you in gsLearn. You will receive email notification when a required training has been assigned to you.
