HOCKESSIN, DE - On Saturday, May 12th, over 200 Girl Scouts and adult members of Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay came together for the 4th Annual Peninsula Day of Service. Even the rainy weather couldn't dampen the good spirits of all who participated!
What started as an opportunity for members to visit the council's camp properties and prepare them for the busy summer season has grown into a community-wide effort to make an positive impact on the environment. For the first time ever, Peninsula Day of Service included both Camp Country Center and Camp Todd as well as five state parks throughout Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay's 14 county footprint in Delaware and the eastern shores of Maryland and Virginia. Unfortunately, the service projects at Cape Henlopen State Park, Delaware Seashore State Park, and Bohemia River State Park did get rained out. Rain dates are currently being scheduled.
At Camp Country Center and Camp Todd, troops and groups worked together to deep clean the indoor and outdoor camping areas, clear debris from outdoor activity and recreation areas, and provided additional maintenance support like installing new fire detectors, repairing ADA accessibility ramps, and more. The event at Camp Todd kicked off with a very special Moon Tree Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. GSCB was thrilled to receive a NASA Moon Tree from the Artemis I mission in November. Special guest speaker Brian Campbell gave a demonstration of the GLOBE Observer Tree Measurement tool and provided a brief history of Moon Trees. Learn more about the Moon Tree.
At Janes Island State Park, a small group of Girl Scout and adult volunteers helped keep waterways clean by picking up trash on the beaches and marsh on Janes Island. Participants at White Clay Creek State Park helped clear invasive plant species from the Judge Morris Estate and surrounding woods.
